Elance vs Getafreelancer (Freelancer)
I am the team leader of a small team of graphic designers, web designers, and coders. I started my career with freelance websites and Elance and Getafreelancer (now known as Freelancer). They were the main two freelancing websites at that time. As for reliability, Elance and Getafreelancer, both are very reliable and have a good reputation in the freelance market. You can see some scam reports about them as well but they are probably from some people who either had bad luck with their clients or had tried to scam their clients themselves.
Comparison Between Elance and Getafreelancer (Freelancer):
Getafreelancer: If you are an individual graphic designer, web designer, or web developer then Getafreelancer is best for you. You will be able to find a lot of small scales and easy-to-use projects there and you won’t need to take care of project plans or documentation, progress reports, etc. The projects on Getafreelancer are usually small or medium scale and small-scale projects take only a week or so and you can quickly get the output of your work.
Your feedback and track record are important but the primary factor in the project award seems to be the price. So even if you don’t have a brilliant track record, if you offer a competitive price, you are more likely to win the project on Getafreelancer. Due to low price appreciation, individuals are more successful on Getafreelancer.

Getafreelancer is free to join and if you want to become a gold member, there is a very little fee to do so and an individual can easily afford it. The last time I checked, the gold member fee was only $19.95 per month. A gold member has to pay only 3% commissions to Getafreelancer on every project but a non-gold member has to pay 10% commission to Getafreelancer.
Elance
Instead of targeting individual freelancers, Elance is much more interested in corporate sector. The projects on Elance are often from medium to large scale and usually are out of work range of a single freelancer so Elance is probably not the best market for an individual freelancer. You should at have a small team or company in order to enjoy full benefits of Elance.
The average Service buyers on Elance seem to be interested in quality more than price. You previous reviews and feedbacks are much more important on Elance and you should have a very good track record in order to win medium and large projects. Elance fees are higher than Getafreelancer fees so individuals with low income might find the fees a little higher for them. Elance charges 6% commission on free membership, and 4% to 6% on paid memberships. Service providers have to pay per bid (indirectly “Connects are spent per bid”) however it results in high quality bids since every one have to pay for every bid so the bids make more sense.
Good project management skill are required in order to sustain a good position on Elance, you will need to prepare detailed project plans, documentation, milestone sheets, quotations and progress reports. Good communication skills are also required to put a professional impression on a corporate buyer.
i want to know how legitimate this kind of thing is?
The work is as good as any other work. Not sure what you understand by legitimate. If you want the developers to sign contracts with you, you can just take care of it via fax and mail. Each of you pays taxes in their own country so everything is perfectly legal. Elance is a niche website cause it got bullied into a small corner by getafreelancer. Elance used to be the “big shot” back in 2003-2004, but their policy of prices forced them into the “high-end” niche. However that’s just an appearance they like to put on, the truth is that you can auction large projects on freelancer.com too and you can find really good providers for it. Just think of it this way, because its pricing policy, freelancer is much more competitive than elance, you just have to do some sorting through the spam. And no, freelancer is definitely not a site only for one-man-shows, there are lots of good companies that operate there.
What about Odesk? I use Odesk to hire free-lance workers….no fees until a payment is made. I cant compare them to anything though because they’re the only freelance provider I’ve used.
I am writing my own post comparing the 2 and I have to say my experiences are a bit different. As an individual, I greatly prefer Elance because I know the sellers value the quality of my work and will pay a fair price for it. There’s a lot of reselling and underselling and article spinning on Freelancer and it’s not my thing. Freelancer also has a lot of bulk projects (I mainly write),
As far as prices, Elance is much cheaper for the kinds of things I do. Freelancer always wants 10% + $1 for withdrawal but Elance will only take 8.75% maximum (that’s including both project and withdrawal fees). And the going rates are simply better. I’ve seen the same projects posted on both sites with a fair price on Elance and a ridiculously budgeted one on Freelancer–simply because providers on freelancer will do it for less.
Elance is also better designed and equipped, in general.
But I’m curious what type of work you’re into because that can definitely change things.

There is a huge difference in pricing at Elance and at Freelancer.com
I have worked on almost any Freelance web on offer and have found Elance and Freelancer to be the best. I will vote in favor of Elance as it is well paid and reward is great if you work hard. But you will get a lot of work on freelancer.com to compensate the low price.
I’ve been working as provider at eLance sometimes at the Engineering & Manufacturing. What can say is following:
– too many 50$ new talents willing to works for that money almost all month
– when they get that 50$ must pay back to eLance cca.12 % (bank, fee, ..), so 38$ they own
– the best business playing eLance owners
– the best job are not publish on board
– most of the job are publish Wednesday cca. 4 GMT
– there is just NO jobs fro EU like Germany, France, Italy, japan,..
– USA job posters really expect very high quality and very low price
– very strange ranking system (top provider made 4 jobs, but someone made 50 jobs and not counting too much
– a lot of providers laying about their experience ( no portfolio samples, no skill tested)
– etc..
What too say for the end :
NOT RECOMMENDED ANY BODY WORKING THEIR, BUT GOOD PLACE TO GET JOB DONE FROM 50 to 300$, PROFIT CAN BE 80%
